Aldactone-100 mg (Spironolactone) is available as 100-mg tablets containing the active ingredient, Spironolactone. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic which hinders the body from excess salt absorption; it also maintains proper potassium levels. It is prescribed for patients suffering from hyperaldosteronism, a condition where there is too much aldosterone in your body. It is also indicated for patients who have had congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, nephritic symptoms, and fluid retention or edema. It has been prescribed to patients with high blood pressure as part of the cardiovascular risk management program.
Dosage and Administration
Aldactone is available in tablet form of 100-mg dosage containing the active ingredient Spironolactone which is taken orally with food to prevent stomach irritation.
Individual dosages vary from patient to patient, usually 400 mg daily for 4 days and may last up to 4 weeks or longer depending on individual reaction to the medication in conjunction with tests conducted by the doctor. The recommended dosage should not be exceeded and the medication is not to be discontinued without prior approval from the doctor.
Patients using Aldactone (Spironolactone) may encounter certain side effects such as:
- nausea and/or vomiting
- numbness and tingling
- muscle pain and weakness
- headache and/or dizziness
- gastric bleeding
- urination problems
For any of these conditions, it is advisable to stop using the medication and consult with your physician.
Patients should seek emergency medical help if they have a much severe allergic reactions such as:
- swelling of the lips, throat, or face
- shortness of breath
Aldactone-100 mg (Spironolactone) is not recommended for patients suffering from kidney or liver disease, diabetes mellitus, fluid or electrolyte, imbalance, metabolic acidosis, and has high levels of potassium.
Inform your physician before starting treatment with Aldactone if you are:
- pregnant or trying to conceive
- have any allergies
- taking any other medications or supplements
Drug interactions with Aldactone
Patients are advised to inform their physician if they are taking any of these medications as it could affect the results: Aspirin, Coumadin, Lisinopril, Potassium chloride, Metoprolol, Coreg and Xanax.
