Avodart-0.5 mg (Dutasteride) is available as 30- capsule packets of 0.5 mg strength; it contains the active component, dutasteride, which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor type of medication. It works through the process of blocking testosterone conversion to dihydrotestosterone in the prostate gland. This medication can be used on its own or in combination with other medications in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It helps with the improvement of urinary flow, decreases the risk of acute urinary retention, and could reduce the need for prostate surgery.
Dosage and Administration
Avodart-0.5 mg (Dutasteride) is taken orally once per day or as directed by your physician along with plenty of water. The medication can be taken with or without food. It is advisable that the capsule be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed, as the active ingredient needs to be released slowly. The dosage for each patient and the length of treatment will depend on the individual condition of the patient and their response to therapy.
Avodart-0.5 mg (Dutasteride) may cause different side effects in patients. The most commonly reported ones are:
- body hair loss or hair growth
- difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
- decreased libido or sex drive
- difficulty with ejaculation; this reaction may cease on stopping the medication
- decreased sperm count
- itchy skin rash
- swelling of the face, lips, eyelids, arms or legs
- breast tenderness and/or enlargement
- nipple discharge
- difficulty breathing
The side effects of Avodart – 0.5 mg varies from patient to patient; however, if these side effects persist or other side effects occur, it is advised to consult your physician immediately or seek emergency medical attention as some of them could be dangerous to your overall health.
Avodart-0.5 mg is strictly to be used by men only and should never be used by women, adolescents or children.
