Details

Uses

Benoquin Cream contains the active ingredient Monobenzone which helps in de-pigmentation especially for those suffering from vitiligo, an ailment that produces white patches or pigmentation on your skin. The cream works by destroying the melanin which produces the pigmentation. With the decrease in melanin, the normal skin areas will gradually lighten. If used as per regulations, your skin will achieve its natural color.

Dosage and Administration

Benoquin Cream is applied on the surface of your normal skin that surrounds the vitiliginous lesions; it is rubbed gently two or three times every day or as per your doctor’s advice. The period of use varies from person to person; it takes a month to about four months to attain a uniform skin color. Once the treatment is complete, you may continue to use the cream once or twice a week to maintain the skin color. Do not change the dosage on your own; consult your physician for any change.

Side Effects

The use of Monobenzone topical may cause some very serious allergies for some people. If you have any of the following reactions get immediate medical help:

  • breathing difficulty
  • hives
  • swelling on the face, tongue, throat or lips

You should also meet your doctor if you have some other side effects, for example

  • intense itching
  • severe irritation of skin or burning
  • swelling or redness of the treated area

Other side effects include

  • dryness or peeling
  • slight skin irritation

Precautions

Benoquin Cream contains a strong de-pigmenting agent and produces permanent de-pigmentation. Hence, it is important to inform your physician if you:

  • have any allergies especially to hydroquinone
  • are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • have any other medical condition or illness
  • are taking any drugs

The medication should not be substituted as cosmetic bleach. Therefore, it cannot be used for any skin condition except for disseminated vitiligo. You should keep away from direct sunlight when you use Monobenzone. Follow your doctor’s advice.

Drug Interactions with Benoquin cream

Benoquin cream is contraindicated and should be used only for disseminated vitiligo. Since, it results in irreversible de-pigmentation; it must not be substituted for hydroquinone. Furthermore, the medication is contraindicated in persons with sensitive skin or those who are allergic to its ingredients. However, drug interactions with Benoquin cream are unlikely as it is applied topically. Nevertheless, it is important to let your doctor know about all the medications you are taking including herbal products and supplements. Furthermore, you should not start any new medicine without notifying your doctor.
