Retina A cream (Tretinoin) - 0.05% (20g Tube) is used to renew skin that has aged or has been damaged by over exposure to the sun or due to acne. It helps to make the skin young and smooth and also removes any discoloration. It comes as a gel, cream or liquid and is for topical use only.

Dosage and Administration

Retina A cream is for topical use and should only be used for the prescribed duration. It has to be applied before bedtime and the required quantity should be used to cover the affected area. When using the liquid it can be applied with a cotton swab, gauze pad or fingertip. Apply carefully only on the affected area. This medication has to be used only after consulting a doctor. Retina A is very effective but the results could be slow.

Side Effects

  • Itching, scaling, mild burning and skin redness in the initial 2-4 weeks
  • Soon after application stinging or warm sensation may occur.
  • The acne may become worse at first and then will gradually decrease
  • In rare occasions exacerbation of inflammatory lacerations may arise when the medicine reacts on lacerations that that already existed but were unseen


Retina A cream (Tretinoin) should be avoided by patients who are pregnant or suffer from eczema. Ensure that the doctor is told your entire medical history including allergies to any drugs.

Other precautions to take are:

  • Avoid going out in the sun or going to tanning booths as the tretinoin makes the skin very sensitive and will burn easily.
  • Wear protective clothing and sunscreen if you go out.
  • Do not use medicine on chapped, dry or cut skin as well as sunburned skin.
  • Ensure the area where tretinoin is going to be applied is cleaned well.
  • It is important to keep this medicine away from the nose, eyes as well as the ears and if it is accidently applied on these areas, wash thoroughly with water.

Drug Interaction with Tretinoin:

  • Soaps, cosmetics or cleansers with strong drying results will react to tretinoin.
  • Products with a high content of alcohol or spices or lime or astringents will also react with Retina A.
  • Any preparation that contains sulfur, salicylic acid or resorcinol should also be avoided.
