Selgin 5mg which contains selegiline helps in increasing the amount of dopamine and preventing its breakdown and this is a natural substance that is in the brain. It helps to restore the balance of the brain. All symptoms of Parkinson Disease like slow movement, tremors or muscle stiffness can be controlled. This medicine is usually given to patients who are prescribed carbidopa/levodopa which helps in controlling all the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. By taking selegiline the effects of carbidopa/levodopa will take longer to wear off.

Dosage and Administration

Selgin is a tablet that is taken orally once or maybe twice a day. It should be taken before meals preferably in the morning and afternoon, with a glass of water. A maximum dosage of 5mg, twice daily is recommended. Some patients find it difficult to sleep when this medicine is taken hence it is not recommend to take it at nighttime. The medicine should only be taken when prescribed by a doctor. Further, the doctor will decide the duration of treatment, depending on the patient’s response to the treatment. It should not be started or stopped at will. Results may show only after two weeks of starting treatment.

Side Effects

Those who use Selgin 5mg may suffer from certain side effects such as:

  • There could be inflammation in the lining of the mouth.

  • Difficult or even painful urination


It is important to inform your doctor about medicines you are taking before you start Selgin 5mg.

  • All food products containing tyramine should be avoided when Selgin is consumed since it could cause headaches and sometimes high blood pressure and this could lead to a medical emergency.
  • Examples of foodstuff containing tyramine are: sausages or salami soy bean products, food with yeast extracts, unpasteurized beer or fermented meat. These should be avoided even a fortnight after the medication is stopped.
  • Any unusual reaction such as hives, skin rashes, chest tightness or breathing difficulty should be reported to the doctor immediately.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or wanting to conceive, the doctor has to be informed.
