Lasix 40mg is a loop diuretic, also called a water pill.  It prevents the body from absorbing too much salt and lets the excess salt be removed from the body in the form of urine.  The removal of excess fluid from the body decreases the swelling in the extremities and abdomen.  It also relieves symptoms of shortness of breath.  By lowering high blood pressure, it helps in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.  An off-label use is in the treatment of hypercalcemia or excess calcium in the blood.

Dosage and Administration

Lasix 40mg is to be taken by mouth under the direction of a medical doctor.  It can be taken with or without food once or twice daily.  It should be avoided within 4 hours of going to bed, so that it does not interrupt your sleep.  Dosages are based on your age, medical status, and your response to treatment.  Therefore dosages should not be adjusted unless recommended by your doctor.  It should be taken regularly preferably at the same time every day.
