Atarax-25 mg (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) is available in tablet form with the active component, hydroxyzine hydrochloride. It is prescribed to patients as an antihistamine, especially for allergic skin reactions such as dermatitis, severe itching, and urticaria. It works through the reduction of certain natural chemicals in the body which causes allergic reactions. It is prescribed for symptoms of sneezing, itching, runny nose and hives, and has been used as a sedative to treat anxiety, nausea or vomiting, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

Atarax (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) is taken orally in 25-mg tablet form 3 to 4 times per day or as directed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but it is preferable that it be taken with a full glass of water. Appropriate dosages as well as length of treatment may vary from patient to patient and will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to therapy. Though Atarax is used primarily for allergies it can also be used to treat anxiety, nausea and vomiting.

Side Effects

Atarax-25 mg has been shown to have some side effects, and the most common ones are listed as under:

  • drowsiness
  • blurred vision
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • dry mouth
  • difficulty urinating
  • problems with breathing or swallowing
  • mood swings

In case these symptoms persist or worsen, stop taking the medication, and contact your physician immediately.

For severe reactions to the medications such as convulsions, confusion, tremors and/or seizures, restless muscle movements of the tongue, eyes, jaw or neck; it is advisable to stop taking this medication and see your physician or seek urgent emergency medical treatment.


Atarax-25 mg (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) may not be prescribed for patients who have cardiovascular, lung, kidney, liver, gastrointestinal, and hyperthyroidism problems.

Before starting Atarax-25 mg treatment, your doctor should be informed if you:

  • have any allergies
  • are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • are breastfeeding
  • are elderly
  • have asthma
  • are using any other medications
  • are using vitamins, supplements or minerals
  • are using any herbal products

Drug interaction with Atarax

The following drugs are known to interact with this medication: atropine, betahistine, cimetidine and adrenaline. Avoid driving or operating machinery till you are certain about any reaction to this medication and it is better to avoid any consumption of alcohol.
