Uses

Rcifax 400 (Rifaximin) contains 400 mg of Rifaximin per tablet. It is prescribed for adults with gastrointestinal disorders caused by bacteria such as travel diarrhea, a type of diarrhea that is not accompanied by blood in the stools or fever. It effectively treats non-invasive bacteria like E. coli but cannot be used to treat invasive bacteria like Salmonella, Campylobacter and Shighella that are the cause for a more serious kind of dysentery. Rcifax 400 works locally and is not absorbed into the blood, and therefore it cannot be used to treat other infections. It is can also be used to treat a condition called hepatic encephalopathy, where it minimizes the loss of brain function that is caused by a buildup of toxins in the blood and liver damage.

Dosage and Administration

Rcifax 400 should be swallowed whole along with a glass of water. While the dosage depends on the seriousness of the condition and is always prescribed by a doctor, the tablet is generally taken once every 8 hour, with or without food. The course lasts for 3 days and should not be extended. When used to treat hepatic encephalopathy, it is generally prescribed as 2 doses of 550 mg per day.
